CT brain without IV contrast
- Strengths
- First choice for: acute trauma, to rule out intracranial bleed, evaluate acute CVA or TIA, or to exclude hydrocephalus prior to lumbar puncture.
- Limitations
- If CT is to be used for neoplastic workup or evaluation of possible meningitis, IV contrast will be required to do so. However MRI is much more sensitive and generally recommended.
