MRA carotid

Strengths
There are non-contrast options, but prefer gadolinium for more accurate imaging.
Limitations
CTA offers best detail over MRA. Can assess for ulceration and characterize type of plaque. Generally less artifact than MRI so often more accurate measurement of stenoses. Consider carotid ultrasound if study is just to screen for carotid stenosis.
Contraindications
1) Standard MR questionaire as to contraindicated implanted devices, surgery, etc.; 2) Gadolinium will be dose-adjusted dependent upon creatinine clearance. It will not be given with CrCl <30 due to risk of NSF.
