- Strengths
- CTA offers best detail over MRA. Can assess for ulceration and characterize type of plaque. Generally less artifact than MRI so often more accurate measurement of stenoses. Includes 3D assessment with measurements.
- Limitations
- MRA carotid useful for screening. Generally requires gadolinium contrast. Some surgeons prefer MRA over CTA for preoperative planning
- Contraindications
- 1) Allergy to contrast, but we will premedicate patient as necessary; 2) IV contrast will be dose-adjusted dependent upon creatinine clearance.
