CT abdomen and pelvis without IV or oral contrast
- Strengths
- great for renal/ureteral stone detection (near 100% sensitive. Oral contrast generally NOT needed unless recent surgery, chronic symptoms (> 3-5 days), tumor evaluation or in thin patients (helps to delineate bowel loops and mesentery).
- Limitations
- IV contrast helpful for other diagnoses and will not obscure detection of stones.
